The Carinthian all-rounder was second (+0.29) at the World Cup finals in Soldeu (Andorra) only to give way to the overall World Cup and Super-G winner from Switzerland, but was clearly faster than third-placed Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (+0.71). Less than four weeks after his debut victory in the giant slalom, Schwarz followed up with his first speed podium.
Raphael Haaser (9./+1.02) was the second Austrian to finish in the top ten. Vincent Kriechmayr, Wednesday’s downhill winner, slipped on his inner ski after a few seconds of skiing. He then complained of shoulder pain. Daniel Hemetsberger was classified 14th, Stefan Babinsky was 19th without any World Cup points.
In the “sandwich” between the two grandees Odermatt and Kilde, Schwarz was of course very satisfied. “He (Odermatt, note) dominated the Super-G season, there’s no shame in being behind him.” In a hurry he gained respect in the speed area this year, on Thursday Schwarz drove only his seventh special Super-G in the World Cup. “Today I managed a really good run, I made good use of the lower number (start number 5, note).”
The frequent starter also seems to have long-lasting batteries in such a dense program. While leaving the upcoming team competition to others, he planned a slalom training for Friday, says Schwarz. “Or maybe I’ll take a break.”
Odermatt celebrated his sixth Super-G of the season, the twelfth in all disciplines. With the next 100 on the points account, Hermann Maier’s magical 2,000 mark shakes. The 25-year-old is still 58 points short. He has one last but excellent chance in the giant slalom on Saturday. A third place would be enough for the best giant slalom player of the season.
