“If I were to regret it now, the decision would not have been so good. At the moment I’m doing as well as it will look in six months, I don’t know,” said the German in an interview with the television channels RTL and ntv.

However, Vettel did not want to rule out a return to the motorsport premier class. “It’s also possible that I’ll go crazy in six months, I can’t stand it on the couch anymore and I want to drive again,” said the Hesse. “Anything is conceivable for the ex-champion at the moment,” emphasized the 35-year-old, who observed from afar how his former racing team Aston Martin was on the podium.

His successor Fernando Alonso was third in both previous races, after Vettel had only followed in 2022.

“Outweighs joy”

At first it was “a bit strange” to see the car so fast, said Vettel. “But the joy for the team outweighs the fact that the team – and I know the boys and girls – have a better car this year.”

Vettel was “not very close” to a short-term comeback at the traditional English racing team in Bahrain at the start.

He initially didn’t notice anything about his former teammate Lance Stroll’s injuries before the start of the season, but then there was contact with the Canadian. The fact that he could have stepped in for Stroll at short notice was “never an issue,” said Vettel.
