Tennis: End of compulsory vaccination: Djokovic can start at the US Open

Because of his lack of vaccination against the corona virus, Novak Djokovic has repeatedly missed important tournaments. Before the US Open, there is good news for the tennis world number one.

Tennis pro Novak Djokovic can plan for the US Open after the end of the corona vaccination requirement for foreign air travelers in the USA. The US government announced that it would also lift vaccination requirements when extensive corona emergency regulations expired on May 11.

The Serb Djokovic, who was not vaccinated against the corona virus, recently missed the Masters tournament in Indian Wells because of this regulation. That’s why he couldn’t start at the US Open 2022 either.

“A conscious decision”

For this year’s edition of the Grand Slam tournament in New York from August 28 to September 10, 2023, the world number one is now allowed to enter. The 35-year-old can also start at the previous Masters tournament in Cincinnati in August. The 22-time Grand Slam winner has already won the US Open three times, most recently in 2018.

Djokovic recently emphasized that he stood by his decision against vaccination despite missing a few tournaments. “It’s a conscious decision I made and I knew there was always a chance I couldn’t come,” he told CNN. The Serb was not allowed to start at the Australian Open 2022 after days of entry turmoil because of the lack of vaccination. In 2023 he won the tournament in Melbourne.
