The German triathlon star Jan Frodeno just missed the podium on his comeback.

The 41-year-old finished fourth at the PTO European Open in Ibiza. Over 2 kilometers of swimming, 80.2 kilometers of cycling and 17.8 kilometers of running, the 2008 Olympic champion and three-time Ironman world champion was around 26 seconds behind third place. This was won by the 25-year-old Dane Magnus Ditlev.

In a gripping race, 27-year-old Australian Max Neumann secured victory in a total time of 3:13:47 hours. He also fended off the attack by the Norwegian Kristian Blummenfelt, who was initially fifth with Frodeno on the last section. At the finish, the Olympic champion from Tokyo and Ironman world champion from St. George was 27 seconds behind Neumann.

For Frodeno it was the first race with a finish after more than 600 days. In the past year, injuries had repeatedly stopped and thrown him back. He had to cancel his comeback, which was originally planned for early April this year in California, due to illness.
