Germany’s former Ryder Cup hero Martin Kaymer has to withdraw from the PGA Championship. The Major is too early for his irritated wrist.
Martin Kaymer will not be teeing off in next week’s PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club. The 38-year-old golf pro from Mettmann canceled his start at the major tournament in Rochester, New York State (May 18-21) on the advice of his doctor.
“Unfortunately, I had to cancel yesterday for the PGA Championship,” Kaymer told the German Press Agency. “I also spoke to my doctor about it. He said three weeks in a row was a bit much for the sore wrist.”
Start at US Open but planned
In 2010, Kaymer won his first of two major titles at the PGA Championship. “I’m realistic about that. I just can’t play that much golf at the moment. I would have gone there and with a good result I might have made a cut. That’s just not my aspiration. Luckily I won in 2010 and I’ve been able to play all my life . That is not that bad.” At the US Open (June 15 to 18) in Los Angeles, however, he wants to start fit again. The Rhinelander won the US Open in 2014 and is therefore allowed to start there until 2024.
Kaymer is currently playing in the tournament of the controversial LIV series in Tulsa, Oklahoma. But he will play the event to the end, said the former world number one. Then it’s back home before he travels to Washington for the next LIV tournament at the end of May.
Kaymer injured his wrist last October and had to undergo surgery in November. Last year, the two-time Major winner joined the controversial Saudi-funded Golf series. The LIV tournaments are criticized because of the million-euro investment from Saudi Arabia. The background is that the country, which has been criticized for human rights violations, is trying to improve its image with lucrative sporting events.
