The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg have won the DFB Cup for the tenth time. The team around the European Championship star and goalscorer Alexandra Popp won 4-1 (1-1) in Cologne on Thursday in front of a record crowd of 44,808 spectators. In the sold-out stadium, Wolfsburg took the lead through an own goal by Lisa Karl from Freiburg (4th minute). After Janina Minge (42′) equalized in the meantime, Rebecka Blomqvist (58′) and international striker Popp (84′) scored for Wolfsburg. After using the video referee for the first time in a women’s cup final, Dominique Janssen scored the fourth goal for the favorites with a hand penalty (89th).
VfL Wolfsburg is hoping for a double
Due to the success, Wolfsburg still has the chance of a double. On June 3 (4 p.m. / ZDF), coach Tommy Stroot’s team will play the Champions League final against FC Barcelona in Eindhoven.
