Basketball Bundesliga: Champions before the playoff knockout: Alba fails again against Ulm

The basketball champions also lose their second home game in the playoff quarterfinals. Another defeat would mean the surprising end.

Defending champion Alba Berlin is threatened with premature exit in the quarter-final playoffs of the basketball Bundesliga. The favorite lost in the third of five possible games to ratiopharm Ulm 81:93 (46:53) and is 1:2 behind in the best-of-five series.

In the event of a defeat on Wednesday (8.30 p.m. / MagentaSport) in the fourth meeting in Ulm, the champion of the past three years would have been eliminated.

Alba started better at home and was leading 27:20 after ten minutes. In addition, Ulm’s coach Anton Gavel had to leave the interior early after two technical fouls. “For me, a decision that cannot be explained,” complained Ulm’s sports director Thorsten Leibenath at MagentaSport.

The Berliners didn’t take advantage of the problems in Ulm – on the contrary. Alba had a longer period of weakness in the second round and went into the dressing room with a deficit of 46:53. The guests, who were now being coached by assistant coach Tyron McCoy, extended their lead to 68:54 thanks to Brazilian Bruno Caboclo and Austrian Thomas Klepeisz (26th).

Ulm also held out against a team coached by Israel Gonzalez that was getting stronger and clinched their second success in the quarter-final series in Berlin. The most successful shooter at Alba was Jaleen Smith with 17 points. Caboclo (22 points) and Klepeisz (19) scored best for the winner.
