FC Bayern threatens to lose the championship – fans leave the arena

After the defeat against RB Leipzig, FC Bayern no longer has the championship in their own hands. Coach Thomas Tuchel has “no explanation” for this – and the disappointed fans leave the arena before the end of the game.

Should there actually be a Bundesliga champion other than Bayern for the first time since 2012? The chances of that happening are higher than they have been in eleven years. After the 3-1 defeat against RB Leipzig on the penultimate match day, the record champions are about to gamble away the trophy. And not only that: There is a risk of a season without winning a title on Säbener Straße. The last time that happened was in 2012.

After the home defeat against Leipzig, coach Thomas Tuchel made a perplexed impression. At half-time his team was leading 1-0, after the break they conceded three goals. “I have no explanation how something like this can happen,” the coach had to admit. “We’re coming out of a good phase. I see the team training, I see the energy, I see the spirit, the quality of training.”

FC Bayern: Spectators leave the Allianz Arena prematurely

When referee Deniz Aytekin blew the whistle, the Allianz Arena had already emptied noticeably. In some cases, after the 1:2 a quarter of an hour before the end, after the 3:1 Leipzig, thousands of fans left the stadium early – five minutes before the end of regular time. The disappointment and dissatisfaction among the Bayern fans who are used to success has been clearly noticeable for weeks. With the early exodus in the game against RB, she showed herself more clearly than ever this season.

After taking office, Thomas Tuchel obviously did not succeed in bringing about the turnaround – quite the contrary. “If we gamble away all these titles and I’m on the sidelines, I’m responsible. I’ll take it on sportingly, that’s very clear,” said Tuchel on Saturday evening in the ZDF “Sportstudio”. “Let’s wait and see if that happens. Of course that would be bitter.”

Salihamidžić and Kahn in focus after change of coach

At the end of March, those responsible surprisingly fired trainer Julian Nagelsmann and installed Tuchel as the new coach. After that, Bayern dropped out of the Champions League and the DFB Cup and is now in danger of losing the championship to BVB. Accordingly, the Bayern management team is under pressure. Should the season actually end without a title win, one has to state “that the change of coach didn’t help,” admitted sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić. During the summer break, everything at FC Bayern should be put to the test – including the positions of Salihamidžić and club boss Oliver Kahn.

Maybe the professionals “need a season in which they experience what it’s like not to get a title,” said the sports director. After the defeat against RB, Munich no longer have it in their own hands to win the eleventh championship in a row. Should Borussia Dortmund win at FC Augsburg on Sunday, BVB would go into the season finale with a two-point lead.

BVB has the championship in mind

Then Bayern would have to hope for a blunder by Dortmund on the last day of the game – and of course win their own game at 1. FC Köln. They haven’t given up hope in Munich yet. “Borussia Dortmund has to win both games first. If they do that, then I’ll say: ‘Hats off, congratulations’,” explained Thomas Müller. “And if not, then we’ll be there – and then we’ll hold the thing up.”
