2nd league: Directly or indirectly: HSV and Heidenheim before promotion showdown

Before the long-distance promotion duel, 1. FC Heidenheim and HSV fulfill their duty. Both sides are determined before the season finale in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Before the big promotion showdown in the 2nd Bundesliga, HSV trainer Tim Walter already made the first taunts in the direction of Heidenheim.

“We wanted to put pressure on the opponent to get promoted. That’s what we did with it. We’ll be there when we stumble next week,” said the Hamburg coach after the 2-1 win against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, looking at the competitor 1.FC Heidenheim.

Thanks to the success, the Hamburgers kept their hopes alive for the second direct promotion place before the last matchday next Sunday (3.30 p.m. / Sky) after SV Darmstadt 98 had secured their first Bundesliga ticket early. The Heidenheimers had beaten SV Sandhausen 1-0 in a long-distance duel with HSV a few hours earlier thanks to Niklas Beste’s goal and had recovered well from the 3-2 loss at SC Paderborn the previous week.

Heidenheim with a better starting position

“Last week, after the defeat, we said: Now we still have 180 minutes, twice 90 minutes,” said Heidenheim’s coaching institution Frank Schmidt. “Now we’ve played one half and next week we’ll play the second half just as well as we did today.”

The starting position before the duel at the locations in Sandhausen and Regensburg, which are 300 kilometers apart, is clear: Heidenheim are in second place in the table. They have one point more than Hamburg and the goal difference is six goals better.

If they win at Jahn in Regensburg, they get promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time. As in the previous season, HSV then only has the detour via relegation against the Bundesliga 16th to become first class again after five years.

HSV must hope for blunders

If the Ostwuerttembergers only play a draw and the table third from the north wins at SV Sandhausen, the HSV is directly back where it belongs to its self-image. The Heidenheimers would then have to try relegation like they did in 2020 – at that time unsuccessfully against Werder Bremen. Remarkable: On the last day of the game, Hamburger and Heidenheimer play against a relegated team (Sandhausen) and against a team that is as good as relegated (Regensburg).

Determination was demonstrated on both sides after Saturday’s games. “We can’t influence what they do. We still believe in second place,” said HSV goalscorer Miro Muheim. His goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes stated: “At this stage of the season you need wins, it’s all about wins. We have our goal, our dreams.”

Heidenheim’s second division top scorer Tim Kleindienst was similarly convinced: “We are optimistic because we know what we can do and that we are always able to score goals,” he said. “That’s exactly how we perform.”

Magath’s relegation theory

HSV icon Felix Magath put forward a very special thesis about who will be relegated. “I’m assuming that HSV realized last season that a game like this means a nice additional income. That’s why Hamburg seems to be looking forward to being relegated again,” said the 69-year-old “Picture TV”.

Last year, as a Hertha coach with the Berliners, he prevented his heart club from entering the Bundesliga. On Saturday he was together with former HSV heroes in the Volksparkstadion on the occasion of winning the European Cup 40 years ago in the final against Juventus Turin and was celebrated as the winning goal scorer from back then. In this respect, HSV is way ahead of 1. FC Heidenheim: it had a great past. The near future will be decided next Sunday.
