The racism scandal surrounding Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior is still the big topic in Spain: After the Brazilian was repeatedly attacked by home fans with monkey gestures and “Mono, Mono” calls (Spanish word for monkey) had been racially insulted, the 22-year-old, who was also sent off in injury time after an assault, once again vented his anger on Twitter. “It wasn’t the first time, not the second and not the third time,” complained the winger, who has been accusing LaLiga of inaction on racism for some time: “Racism is normal in LaLiga. The competition thinks it’s normal, the association thinks it’s normal too, and the opponents encourage it. I regret that very much. The league that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano and Messi now belongs to the racists.”

In Brazil, Spain is “known as a country of racists,” he continued. A reaction followed promptly, league president Javier Tebas did not want to take the blame and also responded on Twitter. “We have tried to explain to you what La Liga is and what can be done about cases of racism,” Tebas wrote. “But you didn’t show up for the two dates you suggested yourself. Before you criticize and insult La Liga, you should do your research properly.”

Vinícius, however, appeared unimpressed and blasted back at Tebas on Twitter: “Instead of criticizing racists, the LaLiga president is once again coming out on social media to attack me. Your ignorance puts you on a par with racists. I’m not your friend to chat about racism with. I demand action and punishment.”

“You’re stupid?”

It was generally not the Brazilian’s day: in the seventh of the 17-minute stoppage time, Vinícius was sent off with a red card. Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea only penalized a swinging motion by the wing star, despite being put in a headlock for several seconds by a Valencia kicker.

Vinícius acknowledged the referee’s decision with mocking applause, which he then gave to the ranks in the stadium when he left the pitch. The 22-year-old also turned in all directions of the circle, showing a two with two fingers – like the peace sign. He alluded to Valencia’s possible relegation to the second division. Would or will he apologize for this gesture? When asked this by a reporter in the catacombs while signing autographs, Vinícius could only ask one question in disbelief, which he repeated a few times: “Are you stupid?”

Real’s coach Carlo Ancelotti was also completely served and is very concerned: “Such incidents have happened before, but like today? This has never happened before. The Spanish league has a serious problem and it’s not Vinícius. What to do I’m not the right person to judge, but football can’t be played like that.” He had “never experienced anything like it. I’ve never seen the whole stadium racially insult a player.” The Italian coach emphasized several times: “The game should have been stopped.”

Those responsible for the royals now want to bring about consequences for the culprits as quickly as possible. According to information from the French news agency AFP, the Spanish public prosecutor’s office has launched investigations into a possible “hate crime” at the urging of Real Madrid.
