National team: U21 team travels to the European Championship with Moukoko, Vagnoman and Schade

The German U21s want to successfully defend their title at the European Championships in the summer. Three senior national players are returning to coach Antonio Di Salvo’s squad. A striker is there for the first time.

With the senior internationals Youssoufa Moukoko, Josha Vagnoman and Kevin Schade, the German U21 national team is tackling the defense of the European Championship title this summer. The three football pros, along with U21 newcomer Nelson Weiper from FSV Mainz 05, are part of the provisional 26-man squad for the European Championship that coach Antonio Di Salvo called up.

While offensive player Schade from FC Brentford will initially still be in action with the senior national team, Dortmund’s Moukoko and Stuttgart’s Vagnoman will start with the U21s on June 10th for the European Championship training camp in South Tyrol.

Di Salvo: “Now get the team in the best possible shape”

“We’re happy to have the three boys back in the team as important pillars for the European Championship,” said Di Salvo about the trio, who last played under Hansi Flick in the senior national team and the U21s in the absence of the injured captain Jonathan Burkardt should lead. Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and Malick Thiaw, who are also still eligible to play for the U21s, are part of the Flick squad. “I am firmly convinced that we are well prepared for the U21 European Championship with this squad,” said DFB sporting director Rudi Völler.

Until June 18, Di Salvo prepares his team in Prad for the tournament in Georgia and Romania. “Now it’s about getting the team, which I’m really looking forward to, step by step and over many training sessions, into the best possible shape,” said Di Salvo. The 43-year-old followed Stefan Kuntz in autumn 2021 and will be responsible for the European Championship for the first time as head coach. He has to report his final 23-man squad to the European Football Union UEFA by June 14.

Before the start of the European Championship on June 22 against Israel, the German U21s are still testing in the training camp against a selection from South Tyrol, and there is also a non-public friendly against Switzerland. Other EM preliminary round opponents are England and the Czech Republic. In addition to defending the title, the ticket for the 2024 Olympic Games is also at stake.
