French Open: Swiatek outclasses round of 16 opponent in Paris

6:0, 6:0 – that’s what tennis calls a “double bagel”. It’s the ultimate penalty, and it was handed out to the tournament favorite’s pitiful opponent at the French Open.

Defending champion Iga Swiatek has moved into the quarterfinals of the French Open with a demonstration of power. The 23-year-old Pole won her round of 16 match in just 40 minutes with 6:0, 6:0 against the completely overwhelmed Russian Anastasia Potapova.

“It ended very quickly, which is quite strange,” said the world number one afterwards: “I was just focused and in the tunnel.” The big tournament favorite is now the first player in the round of the best eight, where she will face either the Czech Marketa Vondrousova or Olga Danilovic from Serbia.

In her dramatic second-round match against Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka, Swiatek remained on the court for three hours and even fended off a match point. The 2020, 2022 and 2023 winner is now unbeaten in 18 consecutive matches at the Stade Roland Garros.
