Bundestag Vice President Katrin Göring-Eckardt wanted to congratulate the German national team on reaching the round of 16 with a post on X. Now she is being heavily criticized for a racist statement.

On Wednesday, the German national team beat Hungary 2-0 in the European Championship match. Jamal Musiala and İlkay Gündoğan scored both goals in the match. Bundestag Vice President Katrin Göring-Eckardt took this as an opportunity to post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “This team is really great. Just imagine if there were only white German players,” wrote the Green politician.

Numerous users reacted angrily to the tweet. The hashtag “racism against whites” is also trending on the platform. Political scientist Carlo Masala commented on Göring-Eckardt’s tweet: “As long as you praise the fact that Germans with a migration background do particularly great things (e.g. score goals), we Germans with a migration background are not Germans, but Germans with a migration background. Nicely meant is not well done.”

Katrin Göring-Eckardt deletes tweet

Extremism researcher Ahmad Mansour takes a similar view. “Anyone who brings up the skin colour of the players on the German national team is practicing racism, regardless of the motivation behind it,” says Mansour.

Göring-Eckardt has since deleted her post and apologized for it. She wrote on X: “I deleted my tweet. I’m sorry about the way I worded it. It upset me that 21 percent of Germans would prefer it if there were more ‘whites’ in the national team. I’m proud of this team and hope that we can convince the 21 percent as well.”

Previously, the deputy head of the FDP, Wolfgang Kubicki, had said that the Green politician should “quickly delete” her post. “I find it really worrying when people in Germany are judged by the color of their skin,” he wrote on X.

According to survey: One in five would like more white players in the national team

With her apology tweet, the Green politician is apparently referring to a survey published a few weeks ago for the WDR program “Sport Inside”. In the representative survey, one in five people said they would prefer it if more white players played in the German national team.
