The reigning South American and world champions can go one better. Argentina repeats the result of the opening match and moves into the final. Messi also scores for the first time.

Argentina’s dream of defending their title at the Copa América lives on after reaching the final. In the semi-final, the South Americans beat Canada 2-0 (1-0) in a repeat of the opening match and are now in the final, which will take place on Sunday (local time).

Football superstar Lionel Messi, whose participation in the Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford near New York City was not considered certain until recently due to a leg injury, played from the start and scored his first goal of the tournament.

In the final, the Albiceleste will face the winner of the second semi-final between Colombia and Uruguay. Canada, which is taking part in the South American Championship as a guest for the first time, will be playing for third place on Saturday.

Julián Álvarez scored the first goal of the match in the 22nd minute. The striker was played in by De Paul and tunneled Canada’s goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau. The score was 1-0 at halftime. Shortly after the restart, Argentina scored their second goal. Messi deflected a shot from Enzo Fernández. In the quarter-final against Ecuador, the 37-year-old had missed a penalty – but the world champions still advanced after a 4-2 win. Before the match, hundreds of Argentinian fans got in the mood for the game with drums and singing in Times Square in New York City.
