A bitter dampener for ski hope Straßer in Gurgl
Slalom specialist Linus Straßer missed the second round in Ötztal. The German ski hopeful’s start to the season failed. Returnee Marcel Hirscher also suffered another setback.
German hopeful Linus Straßer suffered a setback in the second slalom of the Alpine ski season and missed out on the points. The Munich native did not make it into the second round in Gurgl, Austria, in 38th place. Like a week before in Levi, Finland, returnee Marcel Hirscher also missed the final of the best 30. The eight-time overall World Cup winner from Austria, who returned this season after a five-year break and is now driving for the Netherlands, was eliminated.
“It was really bitter. I noticed right up there that I was just following the skis,” Straßer told ARD. The 32-year-old started the race with start number one, but had big problems on the icy slopes and the twisting course in the Ötztal – especially with his material. “It wasn’t fun,” he said.
Straßer came second in the slalom classification last season and is considered one of the candidates for overall victory this winter. After placing seventh in Levi, he has now botched his entry into his specialist discipline. For his teammates, the competition in Gurgl was also over after the first run.
