KHL regular season games canceled during Olympic break

The Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) has decided not to play regular season matches during the Olympic break. On Friday, January 28, the KHL announced on its website.

“The KHL conducted a survey among clubs on whether they are ready to play matches during the pause in the championship during the Olympic Games in Beijing. 16 out of 24 league clubs voted against. The final decision on the format for the rest of the KHL season will be published after February 10, ”the statement says.

The fact that KHL matches can take place during a pause caused by the Winter Olympics in China, said on January 12, League President Alexei Morozov.

It was assumed that the matches would be held from the day the pause began, on January 23, the Sport-Express edition noted.

On January 12, the KHL decided to postpone the regular season matches scheduled for the period from January 15 to 21.

The transfer of games was associated with the epidemiological situation with coronavirus. So, on January 11, 60 team representatives fell ill with COVID-19.

As of January 11, Avtomobilist (Yekaterinburg), Salavat Yulaev (Ufa), CSKA, Dynamo (Riga) and Torpedo (Nizhny Novgorod) were in quarantine.

The Winter Olympics will be held in the Chinese capital from 4 to 20 February. Beijing was chosen to host the Olympics at the session of the International Olympic Committee in Kuala Lumpur on July 31, 2015. It is the first city in the world to host both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
