Russian specialists have been working on an important development for several years that will allow people to explore the depths of the sea. We are talking about “liquid breathing”, which is being studied by employees of the Russian Foundation for Advanced Study.
The technology will help people instantly rise from a depth of about a kilometer without suffering from decompression sickness. The development is currently awaiting certification by the Ministry of Health. Until then, experiments have been carried out only on animals – hamsters and dogs.
“The main task of this liquid is to dissolve gases, oxygen and carbon dioxide. The liquids used in order to obtain the necessary physical and chemical properties were obtained by targeted synthesis. At the same time, these fluids also have a certain prosthetic function. That is, they do not wash out the surfactant, but, on the contrary, straighten the lungs, ”explained Anatoly Bala, head of the project at the Advanced Research Foundation.
Thanks to these properties of the respiratory fluid, humanity will expand the possibilities of exploring the depths of the sea, and will also be able to restore the lungs after diseases, such as COVID-19.
As Bala noted, an important issue of the study was to what extent, under the influence of this fluid, a person is able to carry out any physical actions and understand what he is doing.
“And in connection with this, an experiment appeared in which we showed that a hamster can walk through a maze, while also breathing liquid, absolutely calmly performing complex mental activities,” the expert added.
In addition, this technology will save people from barotrauma when surfacing. This discovery is especially relevant for submariners and military divers.
