Sailing boat caught fire on Lake Attersee

For reasons that are still unclear, the boat caught fire in the area of the anchor winch, the flames spread quickly and spread to the tank. Two fishermen became aware of the distressed sailor, who was drifting around 500 to 1000 meters from the shore in Lake Attersee, and rushed to help.

Meanwhile, the emergency services of the water rescue and the fire brigades in Nussdorf, Unterach, Seewalchen and Weyregg moved out with almost 60 men to water and on land. After water rescuers had contained the flames with hand-held fire extinguishers, the boat was towed to the shore by emergency boats between Unterach and Nußdorf.

“The burning sailing boat was finally extinguished by the fire brigade near the shore, the boat occupants had already been brought to the shore by other boats and taken care of there by the Red Cross,” said operations manager Martin Koblmüller from the Nußdorf fire brigade.

Finally, the boat was checked for embers and tightness by a breathing apparatus wearer from Boot Unterach with a thermal imaging camera. After about an hour and a half, the emergency services were able to move back in. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
