Over 1,300 PS: Mercedes presents its previously strongest hypercar

Attention Porsche, Xiaomi and Tesla! With the Concept AMG GT XX, Mercedes announces a steam hammer that beats up the asphalt with more than 1,360 hp.

The electromobile’s PS promotion hardly knows any limits. It hardly goes by, in which not a manufacturer does not report a new record time on the north loop of the Nürburgring. Services beyond the 1000 HP are now a good tone. Be it at the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, the Tesla Model S Plaid or recently the Xiaomi Su7 Ultra. Only at Mercedes-AMG was suspicious as soon as it was about a hyperpotent electrical athlete. The time of silence is over. Now follow acts. With the Concept AMG GT XX, the star tuning smithy announces a four-door power sedan, which is supposed to show off the Hackords again and the mobile USURPATICHEN with more than 1,360 hp, who is the master in the Stromer-Haus.

The Affalterbacher electric counter also heralds a new era in the design. The four -door sports car’s design language is visually less loud than has often been the case so far. Italian Grandezza garnished with a large portion of Swabian technology know-how. Finally, the study is based on the new AMG Electric Architecture (AMG.EA). We take note of the fact that the color of the concept vehicle is reminiscent of the papaya orange of the McLaren-Formula 1 cars.

Mercedes relies on new ideas for better aerodynamics

The air resistance is more important. At 300 km/h, around 83 percent of the drive energy must be spent to overcome the air resistance. The aerodynamics of the electrical athlete is innovative. A small but fine detail are the movable bike covers that move outwards in parallel to the wheel when the brakes are cooled and press on the rim as soon as the air resistance must be low. The energy for this maneuver provides two batteries in the wheel hubs. The so -called “MBux Light Panel” in the rear of the racing car consists of over 700 individually controllable LEDs that communicate with the environment. It is already clear that this concept will go into series production.

The interior is made puristic. Both the 10.25 -inch combined instrument and the 14 -inch touchscreen are inclined to the driver and the almost rectangular steering wheel is strongly reminiscent of that of the AMG One Hypercars. With the two shift paddles, the driver defines the recuperation and eight LEDs on the steering wheel column does not indicate the speeds or switching points, but with different color codes the loading status (blue), the recuperation and the current performance of the car (red). The seat shells are made of carbon and the covers are made of recyclable fabrics. One example is the so-called “labfiber”, a biotechnological leather alternative based on recycled GT3 racing tires.

Emotionality Contra Elektro

The technicians take new worlds when driving. “We have to save emotionality into the electrical age,” says Jörg Miska, CEO of the Mercedes subsidiary Yasa, from which the engines come. In order to meet this requirement, only the best is good enough for the AMG GT XX. Three axial flow engines catapult the Affalterbacher e-steam hammer to a top speed of more than 360 km/h. The dynamic triangle consists of three compact electric machines: two on the rear axle and one at the front that is only switched on if necessary. These electric machines differ from the conventional radial flow engines, in that the magnetic flow is running along the rotary axis instead of perpendicular to the axis (radial).

E-motor is not the same as an electric motor: electric cars are moved as different

The axial flow engines in the AMG study only weigh around a third as much and are narrower by two thirds than the radial flow variant. Nevertheless, they have a higher energy density and can generate a high torque at low speeds. The engines used in the AMG study are only 90 millimeters at the front and only 80 millimeters wide at the back. The entire Electric Drive Unit (EDU) weighs only 80 kilograms at the front and 140 kg in the back. These engines are complex and therefore more expensive to manufacture. Cooling is also a challenge. The Yasa technicians solve this problem with direct oil cooling of the stator. In this way, the engines can constantly call up full performance when it comes to the point.

Formula 1 technology for the street

The effort is not for nothing. “With the Concept AMG GT XX, we will transfer the axial flow engine drive and battery technology to the series,” confirms Mercedes development board member Markus Schäfer. In order for these high -performance engines to be able to develop their full performance, the battery must be able to keep up. That is why the AMG specialists made themselves smart among the colleagues of the Formula 1 team in Brixworth in English. This makes sense because the batteries of the electrical hypercar have to meet similar requirements as that of the racing cars in the premier class of motorsport. Namely to provide full performance several times in a row. In order to achieve this, the Cylindrical cells developed by the Concept AMG GT XX with an energy density of 300 WH/KG are used, which are high and narrow. This design helps with cooling, since the distance from the cell nucleus to the cooling fluid is low and the effect is therefore directly.
