For many, the camping vacation ends abruptly when they are robbed or their motorhome is stolen together with the personal has. How can you protect yourself?
The most important thing is to avoid uncertain places. A night on a well -rated campsite costs money, but is much safer than an overnight stay in a motorway parking lot. Many campsites offer access controls, video surveillance or staff. The access is often cordoned off in the evening or only accessible with an access card. Also, you are not alone what thieves and robbers deter. Freestanders do not enjoy this protection, but can increase security through well -selected, illuminated parking spaces (e.g. municipal parking spaces). As a rule, public parking spaces do not offer this protection. Apps such as Park4Night or Campercontact help to find safe parking and campsites with user ratings in order to avoid uncertain places.
Secure the motorhome additionally
Burglary can be prevented by additional fuses on the vehicle. For example through special locks that secure the doors – more on this later – or through simple that block the doors from the inside. However, tension belts only offer minimal protection because they can be cut easily. You should with robust be combined. Under no circumstances should valuables or handbags be visible on the front seats. In this way, the risk of break -in can at least be reduced. However, there is no absolute protection. Window locks, such as acrylic glass covers or security films, can also make it difficult to hit windows.
Alarm systems for campers and motorhomes
In view of the high costs of a camper, the investment in a special is worthwhile that also protects if you are not on board yourself. The owners are alerted via the app via their own SIM card, even if they are not on site. The costs for basic systems are less than 1,000 euros, while high-end solutions can be more expensive. As a supplement or cheap alternative, GPS trackers or or Android alternatives (e.g. tile, chipolo). These can be hidden in the vehicle inconspicuously and can be located via the app. However, they do not give an acoustic alarm if the vehicle is moved.
Depending on the vehicle and the desired safety degree, there are different systems. The popular If a solid mid-range solution is, depending on the circumference, costs between 300 and 800 euros and can even be installed itself with technical previous knowledge, with the manufacturer recommending the assembly in a specialist workshop. The Bosch Spexor or comparable systems are a simpler alternative. These compact alarm systems work with sensors for movement, noise and acceleration and alarming alarming via app. However, they primarily monitor the interior and do not offer specific door or window sensors. They do not have to be installed firmly and can also be used in other places.
Cash and documents should never be left behind in the vehicle; A permanently installed safe is recommended. Visible fuses such as tire or steering wheel locks have a ducking effect. Theft is also difficult if the circuit of the ignition is interrupted by a hidden switch.

Mobile homes and campers are by no means just broken up at night. Parking spaces for short stops are also popular with thieves. Professionals drill the standard castle with a battery device in seconds and can open the door. Also complete the vehicle for short stops. For quick opening, additional fuses such as Van lock or . Locks like that can be assembled without drilling, while others (e.g. discus locks) require holes. Each door must be secured individually, which is complex: driver and front passenger door, side entry and the rear doors for panel vans. The additional bars protect from the outside, but in order to get into the secured vehicle yourself, should have at least one door inner protection. Nevertheless, this does not make the vehicle an impregnable fortress – a side window can be hit with a hammer. However, an inconspicuous start in a busy parking lot is hardly possible with door locks.
Beware of the “Breakdown”
All technical systems reach limits when perpetrators are targeted by force. The ADAC mentions isolated reports on narcotics that is initiated through ventilation, but such cases are rare. A gas warning (e.g. for carbon monoxide) can still be useful as a precaution. Are more common “Breakdown tricks”especially in countries like Spain or Italy. Strangers warn of a defective tire or the like, often on remote routes, and temporarily tempt vacationers. Is equally widespread “accidental” Drive up or a fake defect on your own car to attract vacationers to remote areas where they are threatened and robbed. If possible, do not stop immediately, but see a busy area like a petrol station before clarifying the situation.
If in doubt, choose the emergency call
With all the preparation, a normal family vacationer will hardly be able to confront a confrontation and, given a threat, will do everything that is required of it. Caution helps with the breakdown trap – but only limited. Who would drive past an apparently fallen, bleeding cyclist out of fear of an attack? A certain protection is to immediately choose the emergency call (e.g. 112 in the EU), to have the doors locked and only get out when you speak to a helper. ADAC members can also choose their own emergency call. Realistically speaking, determined robbers can always make a vacationer to stop. A street worker outfit with a stop trowel or a flashing light that pretends a police check is sufficient. Traveling in groups or on lively routes reduces the danger.

Conclusion
The best protection remains a safe, well -rated stand where thieves or robbers cannot act undisturbed. Traveling in groups or with other campers, especially free of charge, reduces the risk of raids. Individual holidaymakers benefit from the fact that professional gangs are particularly looking for areas where many campers are on the road. At rest areas, parking spaces or remote locations, protective measures offer security against thieves that want to remain unnoticed. However, if thieves do not shy away from direct confrontation and violence, alarm systems, safes and removals are only limited.
