Germans are stuck in traffic for longer and longer

People in Germany stood in traffic jams for more than 300,000 hours last year. In North Rhine-Westphalia in particular, trunk roads were often congested.

After a decrease in traffic jams in the first year of the corona pandemic in Germany, there are now significantly more traffic jams on German trunk roads. As the Statista graphic based on ADAC data shows, there were almost as many traffic jam reports in 2021 as in 2019. However, the reported traffic jams were on average shorter in duration and length. According to ADAC, the busiest month was August with around 83,000 traffic jams over a total length of around 123,000 kilometers. The longest traffic jam formed shortly before, namely on Saturday, July 31, 2021: on the A8 Munich in the direction of Salzburg between Grabenstätt and the Bad Reichenhall border crossing, vehicles were backed up over a length of 32 kilometers. The federal state with the most congestion is North Rhine-Westphalia, with 32 percent of all traffic jams – as in previous years.
