BMW calls back hundreds of thousands of cars due to fire

Fire danger
BMW is calling for 136,500 cars in workshops in Germany

BMW has determined problems with a starter that was installed a hundred thousand times. Cars of certain years of construction should now get a spare part in workshops.

BMW calls hundreds of thousands of cars into the workshops worldwide to fix a problem on the starter, which in the worst case can lead to fire. In Germany alone, around 136,500 vehicles are affected, as the company reports. There are almost 195,000 cars in the United States. BMW does not call a worldwide number. However, it should be significantly higher, because numerous models from a production period from September 2015 to September 2021 are affected – also in Asia and other European countries.

In the affected vehicles, water can penetrate and cause corrosion at certain points, according to BMW. Starting the engine may no longer be possible. There could also be a short circuit and as a result of local overheating on the starter. “In the worst case, this may lead to a vehicle fire.”

BMW cars only park outdoors

According to the BMW, this can also occur in the parked condition. Affected customers are therefore recommended “urgently to park their vehicle outdoors and not in the immediate vicinity of buildings until the repair is carried out”.

BMW did not comment on the costs of the recall. Since the starter replaced and a stronger battery has to be installed in individual cars, they should definitely add up.
