Challenges of electromobility in the country

At the official launch, José Miranda Montecinosdirector of marketing and communications for BYD in the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Africa regions, noted that the brand seeks to accelerate the transition towards electric mobility in Latin America.

He explained: “With a presence already in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and all of Latin America, the start of operations in Argentina will strengthen our regional network and will allow us to advance more solidly in the mission of leading the transition towards electric mobility in Latin America, offering new energy vehicles that are accessible, reliable and aligned with local needs.”

The executive stressed that the Argentine context represents both a challenge and an opportunity. “In Brazil there is a shortage of chargers. However, after China, it became the country with the most BYD sales. The charging infrastructure is similar to that of Argentina. When electromobility arrives, the development of infrastructure is promoted. We do not have time to waste. We do not wait for there to be infrastructure, we promote the offer and seek to get the State and the different actors to join in a new change of paradigm,” he said.

Strategy and expansion

BYD will operate directly with a local structure and will supply the Argentine market from its plant in Brazil. According to Miranda Montecinos, this proximity will allow us to maintain competitive prices and guarantee supply. He noted: “We are going to work to be number one in Argentina. We understand that this market is different from others because we have to sell with a quota system, but with our factory in Brazil we seek to be competitive and strong.”

The manager added that the company is already analyzing expanding its range of products and eventually producing in the country. “We are going to supply the market with our plant in Brazil, but if there is stability and demand grows, we can think about installing a plant in Argentina. We are ambitious,” he said.

In the first stage, the automaker will benefit from the government regime that exempts electric or hybrid vehicles with an FOB cost of less than $16,000 from the 35% import tariffwhich facilitates more accessible prices. According to the company, more than 1,500 reservations have already been registered during the pre-sale.

Regional projection and next steps

The company has already sold more than 1,500 units in the country and plans to expand strongly in the Southern Cone. The commercial plan includes consolidating its presence in Argentina and Chile, while Uruguay continues as the regional leader in sales of the brand. In the short term, BYD will add new dealerships and expand the network of service points, accompanying the growth of the electric and hybrid car market in the region.

The local landing coincided with greater opening for Chinese automotive companies. Brands such as Tank, MG, Chery and Geely also strengthened their presence, taking advantage of the government regime that allows electrified vehicles to be imported without the 35% tariff applicable to models outside Mercosur. The benefit reaches up to 50,000 units annually with an FOB cost of less than US$16,000 and already has an approved quota for 2026.

Globally, BYD continues to expand its leadership. In September, the company broke a speed record with one of its sports models, reinforcing its image as a global benchmark in innovation and technology. In Argentina, last month, it organized a test drive in a renowned shopping center in the northern area of Greater Buenos Aires, where it presented its range of vehicles to potential clients and specialized media.

“With an expanding network, an increasingly broader offering and the support of a global brand, BYD seeks to consolidate electric mobility in Argentina and contribute to cleaner and more efficient transportation in the region,” concluded Miranda Montecinos.
