tesla announced a called for review of more than 63,000 units of its model Cybertruck in the United States because the headlights emit excessively bright light, which could distract other drivers and increase the risk of collisions. The measure affects vehicles manufactured between November 13, 2023 and October 11, 2025corresponding to models 2024 to 2026, with operating software versions prior to 2025.38.3.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)so far there have been no accidents, injuries or deaths linked to this problem. Tesla will offer owners a free software update to correct the intensity of the headlights.

Research on autonomous driving

The call for review adds to a context of increasing scrutiny on technology autonomous driving of the company. The NHTSA recently opened an investigation after dozens of reports in which Tesla vehicles, using the Full Autonomous Driving modecrossed red lights or drove in the wrong lanes, causing accidents that resulted in injuries and material damage.

So far, they have registered 58 incidents related to violations of traffic regulations, which included more than a dozen collisions and fires and around twenty people injured.

The monitoring of the authorities is part of a set of investigations into Tesla’s autonomous technology, whose intention is to convert millions of vehicles in circulation into fully autonomous cars through remote software updates.

This is not the first recall of Cybertrucks. In March, NHTSA ordered the review of more than 46,000 units due to a risk derived from a outer windshield panel that could come loose while driving, creating danger for other motorists and increasing the likelihood of accidents.

In parallel, Tesla is going through a difficult financial moment. This Wednesday he reported a profit decline for fourth consecutive quarter. Third quarter profits fell 37%until US$1.4 billion (39 cents per share), compared to US$2.2 billion (62 cents per share) in the same period of the previous year. Although sales increased, the company warned that much of the growth is due to customers taking advantage of the federal tax credit of $7,500 for electric vehicles before it expired on October 1, which could have carried over sales from the current quarter.

The recall of Cybertrucks and oversight of autonomous driving reinforce the challenges Tesla faces, both in terms of security as of consumer confidenceas it continues to expand its presence in the electric vehicle market and seeks to meet its CEO’s ambitious goals, Elon Musk.
