Stellantis’ bold plan: New electric cars, hydrogen development and delivery service

Stellantis has presented an extensive electric car plan in the race for electromobility: In the next few years, the Opel parent company is aiming for dozens of new models, progress in hydrogen fuel cell technology and climate neutrality. A sustainable delivery service is also planned.

It’s a bold plan unveiled by Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares on Tuesday: he wants to take his company to the next level to “become an industry leader in the fight against climate change.”

Stellantis calls his plan “Dare Forward 2030”. Because the Opel parent company wants to achieve a lot by the beginning of the next decade: A reduction in CO2 emissions by 50 percent, with brands such as Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Fiat, Maserati, Jeep and Peugeot over 75 electric cars on the market and one Doubling of net sales to 300 billion euros.

Tavares announced: “We are expanding our vision, pushing the boundaries and adopting a new mindset aimed at transforming all facets of mobility.” By the end of the current decade, Stellantis wants to generate 100 percent of its sales in Europe from electric cars and 50 percent in the USA. Stellantis is planning a “specific US product offensive” with more than 25 new electric cars.

The group showed pictures of the first Jeep electric SUV on Tuesday without giving any further information. The only thing that is known is that the model will be launched in early 2023. As part of the electric offensive, Stellantis plans to introduce the Ram ProMaster BEV later in 2023. The automaker also gave a preview of the Ram 1500 electric pickup that Stellantis has announced for 2024.

New car sales from the premium and luxury vehicle segment are to be quadrupled. According to the Stellantis CEO, global annual e-car sales will reach five million vehicles. With the help of a “global digital marketplace”, a third of global sales are to be achieved online. Referring to commercial vehicles, Tavares said: “We will lead the vehicle market with the most efficient portfolio of products and services and offer exceptional solutions to our customers.”

Hydrogen fuel cells for delivery trucks and sustainable delivery services

On its e-mobility mission, Stellantis also plans to increase the targeted battery capacity by 140 gigawatt hours (GWh) to around 400 GWh. The car company also wants to expand hydrogen fuel cell technology to large delivery vans in 2024. In 2025 there should be a first US offer. A collaboration with Waymo, a developer of autonomous vehicles, is also planned. This is how Stellantis wants to promote sustainable delivery services. Because: “Ethical responsibility is at the heart of Stellantis to ensure a sustainable future of mobility (…).”

To implement its plans, Stellantis has announced a fund with an initial funding of 300 million euros. This should enable the introduction of advanced technologies. The car company wants to be CO2-free by 2038.
