The “American Dream” is the longest car in the world – but the monster rusted away for a long time. Now, after three years of restoration, it is on display in a museum again.

This vehicle is definitely not for people who struggle with parking: the “American Dream” model is the longest car in the world. It measures a whopping 30.50 meters and has thus secured an entry in the Guinness Book of Records.

In the original version, which the American car designer Jay Ohrberg produced in 1986, the vehicle was already 18.28 meters long. But Ohrberg went one better and lengthened the limousine by another twelve meters. For comparison: normal cars are around four meters long, according to the Guinness Book of Records.

With these record dimensions, however, the car could hardly be used. It appeared in a few films, but then rusted away for years, largely unnoticed by the public. In 2014, the “American Dream” was acquired by a museum, but the restoration was not financially feasible. Now the longest car in the world shines in new splendor: The current owner Michael Dezer has had the monster restored to its former glory.

The restoration took a total of three years and cost $250,000, according to Dezer, who runs a car museum in Florida. The sedan was built on the basis of a Cadillac Eldorado. Sometimes it was difficult to find suitable parts. The team also had to take a break due to the corona pandemic. But now Dezer is more than satisfied with the result: “It has the original look again. It’s an Eldorado that has been extended to become the longest car in the world.”

There is even a helipad

“The American Dream” can be admired in Dezer’s “Dezerland” car museum. “It’s something you have to see in person,” enthuses the owner. “When you see it live, you think: Wow, look at how huge this thing is.”

There is a special articulation in the middle of the sedan, similar to an articulated bus, so that the huge car can also negotiate curves. The monster travels on 26 wheels and has room for 75 people inside. In general, the “American Dream” has all sorts of crazy, if not very practical features: These include a pool, a small golf course and a helipad. In all likelihood, however, the car will not make it onto the road. “It’s too long,” Dezer explains the obvious. “It was built to be displayed.”
