The Toyota Hilux is the most demanded vehicle with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System in English and anti-lock braking system in Spanish) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program in English and stability control system in Spanish) the argentinesboth for 0km cars and for used ones.
It should be remembered that from January 1, 2022, the inclusion of the stability control system became mandatory in all 0km vehicles. However, according to the request of the concessionaires, the units already produced or pre-sold that did not meet these requirements can be marketed until stock is exhausted.
In this context, it was observed that the drop in the intention to purchase less safe 0km cars (without ESP or ABS) was much greater than the drop in supply forced by the new regulations.
During the last six months, that is, from September 2021 to February 2022, the average price of safe 0 km cars (those with ABS and ESP) rose by almost 29%, while that of the least safe (those without ABS and ESP). ABS and ESP) increased by only 6.3%. For its part, strikingly, in the case of the safest used cars, the increase was 33%; while the average price of the least safe used cars increased by 45%.
Offer and demand
According to the survey, in September of last year the offer for 0km without ABS or ESP was concentrated at 26%. However, in February of this year it fell to 19%, taking into account the official extension for the sale of less secure units.
For its part, in used vehicles there is no impact on the distribution of supply and in the case of demand. The distribution of the same did not show great variations, the least safe vehicles lost only one percentage point both in 0km and used.
On the other hand, the analysis showed that “you can see a drop in the purchase intention explained in part by the reduction in the number of less safe 0km cars, as well as by the notable drop in interest in less safe cars that go from concentrating the 64% of the total contacts in September 2021 to concentrate only 14% of the contacts in February 2022″.
“A trend began to be observed in the market that shows a predominance of units with better security systems” (Brener)
On the side of used vehicles, he also remarked that “there is no impact on the distribution of purchase intention.”
“Since the inclusion of the stability control system, a trend began to be observed in the market that shows a predominance of units with better security systems. Users are increasingly opting for units with EPS or ABS systems”, said Pablo Brener, Head of VIS at Mercado Libre.
Regarding the top 10 vehicle models with ABS and ESP, so far this year, the Toyota Hilux is the most demanded. The same has the highest purchase intention, both for 0 km and for used cars. As for the most offered vehicles, there are the Volkswagen Amarok for 0km and the Toyota Hilux for used ones.

What is ESP?
Stability control is the most important active road safety device on the automotive market today. As highlighted by the report, its purpose is to prevent the loss of the vehicle’s trajectory, for which it uses a series of sensors.
The effectiveness of ESP is especially given when making sudden maneuvers. To avoid skidding, it brakes the wheels individually and maintains control of the vehicle at all times. Stability control centralizes the functions of the ABS, EBD and traction control systems. This technology was created by Bosch in 1995 in cooperation with Mercedes Benz and was recognized as one of the greatest advances in automotive safety in recent times, saving more than 2,500 lives per year throughout the world.
