Tesla: Elon Musk is working on Master Plan 3 – What is known about it so far

Tesla’s success is partly due to Elon Musk’s master plans. The tech billionaire is currently working on a third master plan. What is known about it so far.

“Working on Master Plan Part 3”, i.e.: “I’m working on Master Plan Part 3,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted on March 17. However, he did not write more in the tweet. Nevertheless, some information about its new plans and goals is already known.

“Tesla’s main themes will be scaling to the extreme size needed to move humanity off fossil fuels and AI (artificial intelligence),” Musk wrote on Twitter four days later. “But I will also include sections on SpaceX, Tesla and The Boring Company.”

Musk has already sparked speculation. Because it is the first time that the plans refer to individual companies of the tech billionaire. Accordingly, he could have the plan to bind his companies together to form an umbrella company. However, it is also possible that he is planning future cooperation between the individual companies.

One thing is clear: Tesla plans to expand further. Just last week, the company opened its Gigafactory in Gründheide, its fifth production site in the US, China and now Germany. In an initial phase with 12,000 employees, Tesla plans to produce 500,000 cars a year.

Elon Musk has already achieved Master Plan 1

Master plan 1 and master plan 2 proved to be a precise timetable in practice. Elon Musk published the first master plan in August 2006. He formulated the goal of wanting to bring a sporty four-door family car onto the market as a second model that costs about half as much as the Tesla Roadster. The sale of the Roadster, Tesla’s first production vehicle, should raise money for the production of the second model.

In addition, Musk wanted to bring out a third model with Tesla, which should be even cheaper. In addition, Master Plan 1 included the goal of marketing sustainable energy products from other companies. “Among other things, we will offer a solar panel from Solarcity in a modest size and at modest prices,” wrote the Tesla CEO.

“The reason we had to start with step 1 was because the money I was making from PayPal was the only step I could afford. I felt our chances of success were so slim that I was just risking my own money to begin with wanted,” Musk said. And further: “Founding a car company is idiotic and an electric car company is idiotic to the power of two.”

In fact, Tesla achieved the goals. Because the Roadster was followed by the Model S, the Model X and in 2016 the Model 3. In 2019 the US carmaker then presented the Model Y. The solar business is also progressing.

Master plan 2 partially achieved

Almost exactly ten years later, Elon Musk published Master Plan 2. The aim of this was to bring the Model 3, an SUV and a pickup to the market. Elon Musk also wanted to introduce a heavy-duty truck and high-density urban transit system in 2017. In 2017, Tesla introduced the semi-truck, deliveries of which were postponed to 2022. The Model 3 and Model X are now part of Tesla’s vehicle range. The Cybertruck, one of Tesla’s first pickups, is slated to go into production later this year after the start of production was delayed several times. Tesla only partially achieved its 2016 targets. Because the new Roadster will not be available until 2023 at the earliest.

Even with autonomous driving, Tesla has not yet been able to achieve its goals. With the possibility of self-driving cars, owners should be able to earn money with their Tesla in the future, with the vehicle taking people to a desired destination like a taxi when the owner does not need it. Specifically, Musk formulated the goal of developing a self-driving, adaptive car that is ten times safer than manual driving.

However, the Tesla CEO also wrote in the plan: “It is important to emphasize that the refinement and validation of the software will take much longer than the installation of the cameras, radar, sonar and computer hardware.” Even if the software is highly refined and far better than the average human driver, it will still be a considerable amount of time before real self-driving vehicles are approved by regulators. So far, however, the Tesla autopilot is still causing problems; there have already been several accidents with the autopilot switched on – some with fatal outcomes. The autonomous vehicle range is also not yet in sight.

Master plan 2 also included the goal of promoting sustainable energy production. To do this, Musk planned to provide solar power through solar rooftops with integrated battery storage to accelerate the goal of sustainable energy adoption. “We can’t do this well if Tesla and Solarcity are different companies. That’s why we need to come together and break down the barriers that come with separating the companies,” the Tesla CEO wrote. Tesla now sells a solar roof and home storage batteries (Tesla Powerwall) to charge electric vehicles.
