The new Ford E-Transit Custom as a VW ID.Buzz competition

The new Ford E-Transit Custom as a VW ID.Buzz competition

With the E-Transit Custom, Ford is expanding its range of electric vehicles in the commercial vehicle class. The car manufacturer’s second electric transporter falls into the one-ton class and competes with the VW ID.Buzz.

After the fully electric transporter E-Transit, Ford has now presented the smaller E-Transit Custom. The vehicle falls into the one-ton payload class and has apparently not changed much in design. However, the standard LED lights at the front and rear are new. In addition, the E-Transit Custom appears with a large front grille.

The van will be integrated into the so-called Ford Pro Eco-System, which means “tailor-made software, charging, service and financing solutions from a single source”. The vehicle is also equipped with an on-board modem for digital networking.

Installed 230 volt sockets should be able to be used as a power source, for example to cool the freight or to operate tools. Ford has not yet given any data on the drive battery, but the carmaker indicates an expected range of up to 380 kilometers. There are also no concrete details about the drive or the vehicle dimensions. However, Ford announced that the towing capacity is similar to the diesel version.

Hans Schep, general manager at Ford Pro Europe, Ford’s vehicle services and distribution company, described the E-Transit Custom as “a game changer for commercial vehicle customers in Europe and another important milestone in realizing our Ford Pro goals.” After all, the all-electric van is intended to help convert customers to electromobility. After the E-Transit, which has been in production since March, it is the second electric vehicle in the commercial vehicle class from Ford.

Ford E-Transit Custom: Same technology as VW ID.Buzz

Production of the E-Transit Custom will take place in Kocaeli, Turkey, and is scheduled to start in the second half of 2023. Ford Otosan, Ford’s joint venture in Turkey, produces the new Transit Custom/Tourneo Custom models there, including the E-Transit Custom and E-Tourneo Custom.

The e-transit technology will also be used by cooperation partner VW. Finally, the next generation of the VW Bus will also be built as a commercial vehicle variant at the Turkish location. The VW ID.Buzz falls into the same class as the Ford E-Transit Custom, so there is likely to be competition.

By 2024, Ford plans to launch a total of four all-electric Ford commercial vehicle models in Europe, including the E-Transit Custom and the E-Tourneo Custom. In addition, the Transit Custom is also to be launched again as a combustion engine and plug-in hybrid model.
