With the XM, BMW M is launching an SUV with a V8 engine and hybrid drive for the first time. After the study presentation in November, he has now announced further details. The powerhouse appears with 650 hp and an electric range of 80 kilometers.
In a way, the BMW XM shouldn’t be an ordinary SUV. Because, as is usual with the subsidiary M, the car appears with a sporty engine, but at the same time weighs 2.7 tons. In addition, it works not only with a V8 petrol engine but also with a hybrid drive.
This makes it the first electrified model from the BMW subsidiary and at the same time the first luxury SUV with a combination of the two types of drive. According to the WLTP, the BMW XM should be able to cover around 80 kilometers with the electric motor. “Electrification gives us new opportunities to fascinatingly stage the unmistakable M feeling and bring it onto the road,” explains BMW M boss Franciscus van Meel in a press release.

Overall, the BMW XM has 650 hp and a torque of 800 Newton meters. In terms of performance, the SUV is in line with the competitor Lamborghini Urus (650 hp) and even significantly surpasses the AMG G model (585 hp). The standard equipment includes an adaptive M chassis and electronically controlled shock absorbers. In addition, the SUV is equipped with active steering, in which the rear wheels also steer. And for the first time in a BMW M model, a so-called electromechanical roll stabilization with 48-volt technology is used, which is intended to compensate for uneven road surfaces.
A camouflage film has so far prevented the view of the body of the BMW XM. In the interior, however, there is already a double screen of the iX and the i4. This makes it clear that operation is via touchscreen. BMW has not yet given much more insight into the prototype, which is in the “final voting process”. Information about vehicle dimensions, acceleration and price is still a long time coming. Apparently, the SUV should be available from less than 200,000 euros.
The premiere of the BMW XM is planned for next autumn. In December 2022, the carmaker wants to start series production at the US BMW plant in Spartanburg before the market launch is scheduled for March 2023. The SUV is primarily intended for the USA and China.
