Report Vision AMG: The Swabian hyper athlete

AMG goes electric. That’s for sure. Now the sports division of the Swabian car manufacturer is giving a first glimpse of the next electric hypercar and it will be a horsepower hammer.

The next AMG superstar cannot hide its relationship to the Mercedes EQXX. The elegant body with the flowing shapes, the long wheelbase and above all the striking rear of the Vision AMG is reminiscent of the range king. Covering as many kilometers as possible with one battery charge will not be at the top of the agenda for the hypercar from the Affalterbach-based Mercedes tuner. “The car will have more power than anything we currently have,” says Mercedes chief designer Gorden Wagener. As a reminder, the overdue hyperbolide Mercedes Project One is said to have more than 735 kW / 1000 hp.

“If we show something like that, then it will come,” adds Wagener with a smile. So the Vision AMG study gives a glimpse of the electric super-sportsman that is expected to restore the pecking order on the streets in 2025/26. The basis for E-Kraftprotz is the AMG.EA platform, which the Affalterbach engineers are currently developing, which will be one of three Mercedes architectures from 2025. Part of the new vehicle base are axial flux motors. They come from the British company “Yasa”, which specializes in these drives and was taken over by AMG for this reason. These e-machines are compact, run very quietly and generate high torque without significant heat development. It all fits into the electric future of the Mercedes sports division. “AMG is reinventing itself,” says boss Philipp Schiemer.

The design language remains classic: a short overhang at the front, a windscreen that is set far forward and steeply inclined, and the deliberately wide shoulders at the back give the sports car a dynamic appearance. “I love flared fenders. Like the Le Mans racing cars,” says Gorden Wagener. Aerodynamics naturally play a role: the greenhouse of the hyper sports car fits into the elegant appearance. The roof line tapers and merges directly into the rear spoiler. This aerodynamic trick, which provides downforce, is a classic when it comes to developing sports cars.

The Vision AMG is flatter than the Mercedes EQS. Nevertheless, the study suggests that the production version is a four-door sports car that is supposed to offer the travel and space comfort of a Gran Turismo. To achieve this, the engineers designed a special underbody that houses the battery, which is located between the two axles, without restricting the passenger space inside.

At the front, three star-shaped LED elements look out into the world with self-confidence. However, they will not make it into the series. The reason is legal requirements. So it will come down to classic headlights, but they will have this signature. The two horizontal light strips on the front are even allowed as long as the distance is not more than 7.5 centimeters.

But even with this AMG, it’s not entirely without a riot. At least visually. At the rear, the six indicated exhaust pipes together with the underlying diffuser provide the appropriate conclusion. However, the handsome illuminated tubes represent the rear lights.
