After BMW has revised its X3, it is now the turn of the closely related electric model of the iX3. Hardly anything has changed in terms of technology; the changes go into a sportier look.
The changes to the front and rear make the iX3 stand out more from the combustion model of the BMW X3 and move closer to the new electric versions i4 and iX. However, the BMW iX3 is still only powered via the rear axle. The engine output also remains unchanged: the rear-wheel drive, which will be produced by the BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture in Shenyang in China from September, has a range of 460 kilometers. The BMW iX3 is manufactured in Shenyang for the local Chinese market as well as for global export. Outside there are new people units and details on the sills; Inside, the iX3 now offers a larger central display in addition to the standard sports package.
The electric motor of the BMW iX3 works on the principle of an energized synchronous machine and thus differs from other solutions on the market. The rotor is not excited by permanently installed permanent magnets, but by the supply of electrical current. This design makes it possible to dispense with the rare earth metals required for the magnetic components in the manufacture of the rotor. In addition, the electric motor is particularly efficient at 93 percent. The lithium-ion battery with a usable energy content of 74 kWh consists of prismatic battery cells that are grouped into ten modules and individually enclosed in an aluminum housing. Thanks to its battery power, the BMW iX3 sprints from a standstill to 100 km / h in 6.2 seconds and is electronically limited to 180 km / h.
With an AC connection, the BMW iX3 can single-phase charging with an output of up to 7.4 kW and three-phase charging with up to 11 kW. When connected to a direct current fast charging station, charging capacities of up to 150 kW can be achieved. The high-voltage battery can be charged from zero to 100 percent in 7.5 hours at the wallbox at home. At a direct current rapid charging station, the battery increases from 10 to 80 percent within around half an hour. The BMW iX3 can refuel by 100 kilometers in ten minutes. The price should be on par with the predecessor (66,300 euros).
