Driving report BMW CE 04 L3e A1: Greetings from Batman

The electric BMW CE 04 scooter could also come from a Batman movie. Until now, the futuristic two-wheeler was only available with a rated power of 15 kW / 20 hp. We drove the A1 version, which can also be driven with the B196 driver’s license.

Summer time scooter time. Cities are bursting at the seams, which is why two-wheelers are experiencing a renaissance. Especially since the B196 driver’s license also allows car drivers to drive the speedy speedsters with a maximum output of 11 kW / 15 hp. BMW does not want to miss out on these sinecures and bases the long-term performance of the fully electric BMW CE04 scooter on exactly this value. When it comes to new scooters, the Munich designers are generally a bit more progressive and the CE 04 is no exception. The single-track vehicle looks like something out of a Batman movie. As soon as you drive off, it sounds the same. casual.

The only question is whether this futuristic vehicle is also comfortable in everyday life. Unlike a classic scooter like the Vespa, the BMW CE 04 does not have a deep step-through like a Vespa due to the height of the battery. Nevertheless, we swing easily onto the padded board of the BMW scooter. Only smaller people may have to do some magic when stopping at traffic lights due to the wide torso. The driving position is typical for a scooter and after only a few kilometers we realize that the chic-but-uncomfortable thoughts were premature. The BMW Motorrad technicians know what they are doing. The CE 04 has a wheelbase of 1.675 meters, sits firmly on the road and absorbs everything the asphalt has to offer in terms of bumps in a very relaxed manner.

In combination with the chassis construction with the telescopic fork at the front and the single-sided swingarm with a directly linked spring strut, the long wheelbase conveys confidence-inspiring sovereignty, which also allows us to easily master high speeds in excess of 100 km/h. The BMW e-scooter is also really good in curves and is much more agile even at slow speeds than the angular, bulky appearance suggests. Top. Of course, when weaving through the city, the BMW scooter does not achieve the maneuverability of a Vespa Primavera. With a weight of at least 231 kilograms, maneuvering is anything but easy. BMW was clever enough to include a reverse gear that you can activate with constant thumb pressure.

The strength of the BMW CE 04 is the tours over country roads, which we mainly drove on. Thanks to the electric motors, which are similar to those in the BMW 2-series hybrid, and the 8.9 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, the scooter is powerful. After 2.7 seconds, 50 km/h are reached and only at 120 km/h do the electronics say “basta”. Even in the “Eco” driving mode, the sprint is so impressive that you repeat this stunt for the true joy of acceleration. The “Rain” driving program is specially tuned for wet road conditions, while in “Road” the drive train is still eager to accelerate. The optional dynamic mode is a touch more direct and allows the engine brake to act even more strongly during automatic recuperation, so that you can do without the analogue brakes. In addition, the energy recovery is so well coordinated that it does not drop anchor dangerously abruptly at high speeds. We ran in Eco mode most of the time, which is perfectly adequate as the CE 04 still has more than enough power there. BMW gives an average consumption of 7.7 kWh/100 km, after our drive the on-board computer determined 9.0 kWh/100 km.

BMW has installed a great deal of technology to ensure that the driver reaches his destination safely. The ABS anti-lock braking system and stability control are standard. Anyone who wants to have fun when leaning should take a closer look at the DTC and ABS Pro, which are subject to a surcharge. As is usual with German premium manufacturers, there is a surcharge list that increases the basic price from 11,990 euros to 14,024.99 euros. If you want, you can still order heated grips and a top case. The latter in particular makes sense with the CE 04, since the number of shelves is limited. So you have to suffer a bit because of the beauty. The scooter’s own storage compartment opens at the push of a button on the side and also holds a helmet, but if you take the charging cable with you, this splendor is over. A higher windshield (90 euros) also makes sense for tall drivers. When you’re going fast, the air resistance tugs at your helmet and all sorts of insects bounce off your helmet and body.

Let’s get to the range. In the case of the reduced-power version, this is 100 kilometers (according to the WMTC cycle). When we started our journey, the display flashed 92 km. This is not necessarily conducive to long tours, but if you use the BMW CE 04 for commuting or in the city and can charge it regularly, ideally every day, the smart Munich e-scooter is definitely an option. With the standard Mode 2 charging cable, it takes almost 3:30 hours before the energy storage is charged from zero to 80 percent. Should it be 100 percent, the procedure is completed after around 260 minutes. BMW offers an optional 6.9 kW charger for an extra charge. Then the 80 percent is reached after 65 minutes, if the batteries are completely full, it takes about 35 minutes longer.

With the CE 04, the engineers not only borrowed from the passenger car for the drive train, the four-wheeled relationship is also evident in the infotainment with the 10.25-inch display and operating logic. A rotary wheel next to the left handle, which can also be moved horizontally, replaces the rotary push button and the navigation system operates in conjunction with the BMW Motorrad Connected app. If you have the right helmet, you can connect it to the system via Bluetooth. As Batman, you can always stay in touch with the operations center.
