Two automakers stop production due to lack of tires

The suspension of activities will also continue tomorrow, Tuesday, and it is expected that on Wednesday if the supply is normalized.

In the case of the French brand, the affected model is the Alaskan, since the other vehicles that it manufactures in Santa Isabel operate normally. Meanwhile, the Japanese suspended production for these two days of the model Frontier. The two companies are working one shift, but plan to move to two in the coming weeks.

According to industry sources, the situation is very delicate in all automakers. “At the moment, we are working, but we know that we are going to have problems in the coming days,” they recognized Ámbito, this morning, from another terminal.

For several weeks, the tire manufacturers and the sector union have been discussing the wage adjustment for workers. Given the lack of agreement, the union implemented a plan of struggle with the cessation of activities that caused a brake on the production of these products.

This generated a break in the supply chain towards the automotive terminals. The lack of tires has already been recorded for months due to the obstacles to imports that were implemented due to the shortage of dollars. Part of the market is supplied with imported products.

Added to this are the problems that exist in all the auto parts companies due to the restrictions on foreign currency that imposed by the Central Bank.

Since last month, the monetary entity and the automotive terminals have been discussing an agreement so that suppliers can pay for their imported inputs since, otherwise, automotive production would be paralyzed.

The idea promoted by the Central is that the automakers stop demanding dollars for the importation of cars for a certain period and that these currencies can be used so that the auto parts manufacturers pay abroad for their purchases of inputs. In turn, the automakers would have to postpone payments to their parent companies for the importation of 0km.

In practice, what is being proposed is that the companies “lend” those dollars to the State because there are not enough reserves at the Central to meet the demands of automakers and auto parts manufacturers.

The implementation of this system is very complicated and there is no definitive agreement. However, the Central would issue a circular this week setting the mechanism in motion, although many points of its implementation remain undefined. According to sources consulted by Ámbito, the Central’s idea is that these problems be solved on the fly.

There is a lot of discomfort in the companies because they understand that the Government is transferring responsibility for the functioning of the mechanism to the terminals and that, in the event of stopping production, the questioning is addressed to the automakers and not to officials.
