Tesla Model Y: Great demand in Australia surprises Elon Musk

Tesla Model Y: Great demand in Australia surprises Elon Musk

The Tesla Model Y can now also be ordered in Australia. And with that, orders for the electric SUV immediately skyrocketed. That also surprised Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

When Tesla launched the Model Y in Australia last Friday, the US automaker said the expected delivery period would be between August and November for the basic version and between November and February for the performance version. Three days later, however, the specified delivery of the Model Y vehicles was postponed to the period between February 2023 and May 2023.

According to a media report, the reason for this is the enormous demand in Australia. “We didn’t expect demand to be so high!” Elon Musk tweeted on Monday. At the same time he assured: “We are working on the production of the RHD [Hinterradantrieb] to accelerate Model Y.”

The Tesla vehicles for the Australian market will be produced in the Tesla plant in Shanghai – as will the Model Y vehicles in Germany when deliveries begin in August 2021. Rumor has it that the first batch of cars in Australia was 3,000 vehicles. The second batch should therefore consist of 5000 vehicles, as the Australian car portal “CarExpert” writes.

Tesla sold out in Australia for this year

The Australian technology portal “TechAu” suspects that the compact SUV is more popular than the Model S sedan that is also already available. In comparison, the Model Y is a more practical vehicle with significantly more storage space. And it offers a more confident riding position, which appeals to more buyers.

The Model 3 is also expected to be delivered between February and May 2023. The Model S and X are not yet in the Australian market, so Tesla is practically sold out in Australia for this year. For comparison: According to Tesla, the expected delivery period for the Model Y in Germany is currently between October and December.
