Nio-Auto crashes out of the company building – two people die

In Shanghai, a car belonging to the Chinese electric car manufacturer Nio fell from the third floor of the company’s headquarters. Two people died as a result. The background to the accident is not yet clear.

The fatal accident happened on Wednesday afternoon: a car fell out of the Nio company’s headquarters in Shanghai, killing two people. According to media reports, it was an employee of the company and an employee of a partner company. They were in the vehicle when it fell. There is conflicting information about the third floor area from which the car fell. It has been described as a multi-storey car park, test center or showroom.

According to his own statements, Nio then immediately launched an investigation into the incident in cooperation with the government authorities. “Based on the analysis of the situation at the scene of the accident, we can first confirm that it was an accident (not caused by the vehicle),” the company wrote in a statement published on the Weibo social network. Nio also expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved. A team had been formed to help the families, it said.

In a video published on Twitter, a car can be seen lying on its side – surrounded by numerous pieces of debris. Several rescue workers apparently tried to free the injured people from the vehicle. This is said to be the Nio ET5 sedan, which came onto the market at the end of last year and is to be delivered in China from the third quarter of this year.

Explanation leads to angry reactions

Meanwhile, the statement that the accident was not caused by the vehicle sparked numerous angry reactions on the Internet. One person wrote: ‘This shows the coolness of capitalism’, while another commented: ‘The last sentence is so indifferent. The test drivers came to test the vehicle but they say the accident had nothing to do with the vehicle Has?”

A third demanded: “It should be the Public Security Bureau to confirm whether it was an accident or not.” The statement has since been deleted and Nio has issued a new statement. It also mentions an accident, with the words “not caused by the vehicle” written in brackets.

Nio plans market expansion in Europe

Nio has been selling electric cars in China for some time and is one of the most successful electric car brands in the country. However, the incident is likely to put the company in a bad light – precisely at a time when the Chinese automaker is looking to expand in the European car market. By the end of the year, Nio wants to launch its vehicles in Germany, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands for the first time. Norway is so far the only European country where the company is already selling vehicles.
