After brands such as Audi, Volkswagen and Volvo achieved sales successes with their light cross versions for around 20 years, Mercedes followed late with its E-Class All-Terrain in 2017. Now the new C-Class is also being upgraded to a light SUV.

In itself, many had thought that they had already outlived the trend towards the symbiosis of station wagons and SUVs. But although more and more off-road vehicles and crossovers are now on our roads, more customers than ever are getting a taste for a mixed solution. After the Audi A4 Allroad and the VW Passat Alltreck in particular continued to enjoy great popularity, the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain will also have a little brother after the IAA. “With the C-Class All-Terrain, we are adding a new variant in this successful segment to our strong range in addition to the sedan and T-model,” says Britta Seeger, Sales Director at Mercedes.

Compared to the combination model of the normal Mercedes C-Class, the 4.76-meter-long C All-Terrain has slightly increased in size. Because of the wheel arch linings, the width increased by 21 millimeters to 1.81 meters and the four centimeters more ground clearance bring a total height of 1.49 meters. The Mercedes C-Class All-Terrain is standard on 17-inch wheels with 225/55 tires. Optionally, 18 or 19 inchers are available, which are particularly good for the look of the light crossover. In contrast to the T-model of the new Mercedes C-Class, apart from the plus in ground clearance, there is an identical interior and a load space that can be expanded from 490 liters to 1,510 liters by folding down the rear seat behind the electric tailgate.

In contrast to the Mercedes C-Class T-model, the all-terrain version also offers body details such as crash barriers, a special off-road driving program and an off-road light that better illuminates the area around the vehicle. The Mercedes C-Class All-Terrain is equipped with all-wheel drive as standard, which is available in two engine variants, the diesel of the C 300d and the petrol C 350. Both engines have a mandatory automatic transmission with nine speed levels and mild hybridization with a 48-volt electrical system. The ideal line-up is likely to be the Mercedes C 300d All-Terrain with its 195/265 hp common rail diesel, whose standard consumption should be less than 6.0 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. In terms of price, it should start at around 60,000 euros. However, like the C-Class, the C 220d will also be added later as a basic variant of the All-Terrain. The entry-level SUV then celebrated its official premiere at the IAA in early September.
