Drako Dragon: Luxury electric SUV with 2000 hp presented

First of all: Calling a car from a manufacturer named Drako “Dragon” of all things does not necessarily indicate creativity. With a look at the official performance data of the vehicle, however, this lapse can be forgiven: Because the “Dragon” does not want to score with a nice name, but with hard facts.

According to the manufacturer, the electric SUV from the hitherto relatively unknown manufacturer from San Jose, California, is intended to “redefine the way the world thinks about automotive performance”. In the course of this full-bodied announcement, the company presented the first, very dark pictures – and a handful of data.

Electric car with a top speed of 320 km/h – for how long?

The “Dragon” is an SUV with five seats, easy entry, gullwing doors, fine leather and lots and lots of storage space. Drako combines this with a total of four engines that together produce 2000 hp. This should bring the heavy vehicle to a top speed of around 320 kilometers per hour and an acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 1.9 seconds. The company does not reveal which battery the car uses for this – and how long it lasts when full power is constantly called up.

But the performance alone is not enough: According to Drako, the vehicle should be “price-competitive with the existing super SUV segment”. Measured against a Lamborghini Urus, which the “Dragon” looks not dissimilar to, that would be 220,000 euros at best. If Drako were based on Tesla’s Model X Plaid, it would be “only” 110,000 euros. The press release leaves open which vehicles are classified as “super SUVs”.

So far only homeopathic quantities

Either way, both price regions would be a lot of money for a vehicle from a manufacturer that has only built a single car in a small series and has hardly made an appearance. Drako Motors has existed since 2013 and is owned by CEO Dean Drako of the same name. The young company’s first product, the Drako GTE, was released in 2019. This is a super sports car based on the Fisker Karma and is seen in the industry more as a technology demonstration. Only 25 models of the GTE were built. With a price of more than 1.2 million US dollars, the vehicle only serves a very limited clientele. The “Dragon” should change that.

To design the SUV, Drako hired Italian Lowie Vermeersch, a director at Pininfarina and creator of vehicles like the Ferrari FF and Ferrari 458. The “Dragon” is to be built in Italy and will be launched later this year. Those interested in the vehicle can register now, and reservations will soon be made possible.
