The UK police have a serious problem: they don’t always get to the scene on time. The reason is the all-electric police cars that are running out of electricity.
In the UK, it is not uncommon for the police to be slow to arrive at a crime scene or emergency department. This is due to the electric cars that are in the British police fleet. The vehicles are having range problems, as the British newspaper “Daily Mail” reports.
Police officers, at least in rural areas, have difficulty reaching a distant location, says Chris Nelson, Police and Detective Inspector for Gloucestershire, south-west England. The reason is the insufficient number of charging stations for electric vehicles. The officers therefore first have to change vehicles in order to get to the scene. Gloucestershire Police has the largest percentage fleet of electric cars.
Great Britain: Police commissioner believes in future of electric cars
Nelson nevertheless acknowledged that the future of police lies in electric vehicles. “We all need to switch to electric vehicles to move forward,” the police and crime inspector told the Daily Mail. At the same time, however, he also expressed doubts about the success of the fully electric police cars. For example, the design options for electric vehicles for operational use “may not have progressed as far as I would like”.
He continues: “I would like to see more uses so that, for example, a police officer who is investigating a traffic accident in a rural area and has his lights, radio and heater on does not end up without power just because he or she is in a electric car sits.” Although Nelson supports climate-friendly measures, fighting crime is a priority.
