The Cinquecento turned 65

The Cinquecento turned 65

“Once upon a time there was an authentic and piccolo Italian car, which crossed borders and conquered the world. Of course we are talking about the Fiat 500, which with its unique and unmistakable design has become an icon and an important milestone not only in the history of Fiat, but also in the global automotive industry”, the Italian brand celebrated in a release.

The “Cinquecento” was a resounding success: it was marketed in more than 100 countries and has accumulated more than 40 awards on its resume. In 2017, when he turned 60, he entered the permanent collection of the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York.

The Fiat 500 also had dozens of special series, such as the recent Bocelli La Prima, with a sound system developed in collaboration with the master Andrea Bocelli. Other outstanding special series were those associated with famous brands, such as Gucci, Armani and Bulgari. The icon also gave birth to a family that has been growing, with models like the 500X, 500L and 500 Abarth.

“Designed by Dante Giacosa, it was launched on July 4, 1957 in post-war Europe, which needed to provide mobility to the masses, but had few resources. The solution to this problem was small and affordable vehicles in terms of price, production and, above all, fuel consumption. Thus the Fiat 500 was born in Italy. Its small 479 cm³ two-cylinder engine produced 13 horsepower. With its 3 meters in length and 500 kg in weight, it moved with ease through the narrow European streets”, recalled Fiat.

In the following years it acquired many novelties: the Sport version in 1958 with a more powerful engine and the 500 C in 1959 with a convertible version. In the following decade came the Giardiniera in 1960; and in 1965, the 500 F version that would become the most popular of all versions of the model, with doors that opened to the rear, and in 1968 it was the turn of the 500 L version with chrome details throughout the body and leather interior.

Until 1975 approximately four million units of the original Fiat 500 were produced. The icon greatly contributed to the motorization of the European continent in that post-war era. In 2007 it was redesigned and returned to the market with the same “cool” spirit and style, but with more safety, technology and refinement. The result of this successful assembly is the more than two million units of the Fiat 500 relaunched in 2007 sold to date.
