More and more cabriolets are being removed from car manufacturers’ product portfolios. Not so with Mini. The increasingly electric Brits are giving a preview of the next generation with an open Mini Cooper SE. The one-off is intended to show that it is open to almost anything – with help from China and, of course, purely electrically.
Technically, the open electric model is a twin of the well-known Mini Cooper SE. It is powered by an electric motor from the now discontinued BMW i3, which is installed in a subframe under the hood. The 3.86 meter long one-off Mini Cooper SE Cabrio is powered by the 135 kW / 184 hp electric motor, which also gives wings to the closed two-door model. From a standing start, it accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and, like its closed brother, has a range of 230 kilometers before it goes to the next charging stop at a maximum of 150 km/h. The electric fabric roof opens in 18 seconds up to a speed of 30 km/h. If you don’t want to open the roof completely because of the weather or speed, you can use a sunroof function. Everything is well known, but here with an electric base.
The Mini Cooper SE Cabriolet celebrates its world premiere at the US event “Mini takes the States” in Asheville, North Carolina. The closed version of the Mini Cooper SE has hit the ground running – expectations of the successor are correspondingly high. Despite the advanced product cycle, waiting times for the current generation are long, while every third model from the British BMW brand is now electric. The new mini model series – developed jointly with Great Wall – is scheduled to celebrate its premiere at the end of 2023 and be delivered to customers from Zhangjiagang, China, at the beginning of 2024. The new Mini Cooper E is said to have 135 kW / 184 hp and a 40 kWh battery. Above that is the Mini Cooper SE with 50 kWh and 165 kW / 225 hp, which means electric ranges of 300 or 400 kilometers – both open and closed.
