A 23-year-old had to stop his e-scooter for a police check. When the scooter then came to the test stand, the police officers must have rubbed their eyes: a top speed of 120 km/h was measured.
The Swiss police have pulled an electric scooter – also known as an e-scooter – out of circulation, which can accelerate to Trabi speed. The two-wheeler had been upgraded to a speed of 120 kilometers per hour, as the Valais canton police announced on Thursday.
E-scooters are only permitted up to a speed of 20 kilometers per hour, both in Switzerland and in Germany. This was made possible by a built-in motor with 4000 watts of power. However, only companions up to a maximum of 500 watts are permitted. The 23-year-old driver was stopped and reported in the village of Brig-Glis in the Rhone Valley.
E-scooter actually only stopped because of lighting
Curiously, the man and his vehicle were not caught by the police for speeding. Rather, something was wrong with the lighting on the e-scooter. The fact that the man was driving an illegally souped-up machine only turned out later on the test bench.
According to the ADAC, you generally do not need a driver’s license to drive an e-scooter that is street legal. However, a minimum age applies. Electric scooters may be used from the age of 14. There is also no obligation to wear a helmet, although the Automobile Club recommends wearing a helmet. This is the only way to protect yourself properly in the event of a fall or accident.
Same alcohol limits as for cars
When it comes to alcohol, the same limit values apply as for drivers. “This means that anyone who drives with 0.5 to 1.09 per mille and shows no alcohol-related abnormalities commits an administrative offense and receives a fine: as a rule, this is 500 euros, a month’s driving ban and two points in Flensburg,” says the ADAC to consider. However, if you are under the age of 21 and have just obtained your driver’s license, you even have to stick to the 0.0 alcohol limit during the probationary period.
