The US electric car manufacturer Tesla is planning to integrate an improved version of its autopilot computer and new cameras in all models from next year. This was confirmed by company founder Elon Musk at the company’s AI Day.
In addition to the big announcement of a humanoid robot, Tesla’s AI Day last week also had some interesting news about autonomous driving to offer. Company founder Elon Musk confirmed long-running rumors that Tesla wants to revise its self-developed autopilot computer again. It is the third update since spring 2019.
Tesla autopilot gets another update
Five years ago, Tesla announced for the first time that it would equip all of its future vehicles with hardware that could enable fully autonomous driving with the help of later software updates. As it turned out later, the American automaker could not keep its great promises. The original Nvidia computer had to be revised twice in order to partially implement autonomous driving.
The updates also generated some controversy. After the “Full Self-Driving Software Package” was still available free of charge, customers had to pay $ 1,500 for the “Full Self-Driving Subscription Package”. Due to Tesla’s earlier promises, the move attracted some criticism.
Two areas in particular continue to make the autonomous driver assistant difficult to cope with: the detection of obstacles that prevent the cameras from viewing curves or intersections and the reading of signals that require a certain driving style, such as the merging of two lanes. The new computer should now deal with these problems.
Elon Musk: Computers are four times safer than humans
As Elon Musk announced on Thursday, the third version of the autopilot system will follow with “Hardware 4” and “Full Self-Driving Computer 2”. According to the American magazine Electrek, there are doubts even with the new computer as to whether the capacity would actually be sufficient for completely autonomous driving.
Musk contradicted the allegations at the event in California, stating that the new hardware would further widen the security gap between humans and autonomous vehicles. In addition, the Tesla CEO put forward the thesis that the new system could drive around four times safer than a human.
Autopilot computer probably first available in Cybertruck
Whether these announcements will come true will probably be seen in a year. Musk has already promised an exact time for the first use of the new systems. Together with improved cameras, “Hardware 4” is to be installed in the eagerly anticipated Cybertruck. After the pickup, all other models will probably follow. In April, Tesla announced that it would only use cameras for its autopilot system and no longer want to use radar.
Musk’s announcement also contained a note on the exact release date of the Cybertruck. According to the entrepreneur, the “full self-driving” computer would “probably be produced with the cybertruck in about a year.” Tesla had postponed the start of production on its website from 2021 to 2022 without comment. A start in the second half of next year, now brought into play by Musk, appears to be a realistic schedule.
