Michael Schumacher: Ferrari from the 1998 Formula 1 season is sold

Real Formula 1 cars don’t go on sale very often. Admittedly, the target group for the high-powered racing cars is likely to be very small due to the price and the very limited use. But when a vehicle like this comes under the hammer, it gets exciting: “Sotheby’s” wants to auction a Ferrari F300 driven by Michael Schumacher – second-hand!

Four wins for Schumacher – in this car

The car is chassis 187, according to the auction house “the most successful and undefeated Ferrari racing car in Formula 1 history.” In fact, number 187 can point to considerable successes: Michael Schumacher clinched four victories with the vehicle in the 1998 season: Canada, France, England and Italy.

Fans will not only associate the F300 with jubilation: in 1998, despite impressive performances, Schumacher seemed to be plagued by bad luck and “only” managed to finish second in the world championship. The car was also to blame for this, as new rules for the season made the start of the season more difficult.

Schumacher remained persistent and was on course for the World Cup towards the end of the season, despite all the adversities. But just in the last race in Suzuka, Schumacher’s engine died, which ruined his pole position. When the tire failed during the race to catch up on lap 32, it was over – and Mika Häkkinen won his first title in the Silver Arrow.

Probably not less than six million dollars

That probably doesn’t detract from the price of the car – especially not in today’s world. If you got the test car ten years ago for 400,000 British pounds, this time it looks different with number 187. In the press release on the auction, “RM Sotheby’s” expects to achieve between six and eight million US dollars.

This is not an unrealistic scenario: In April, chassis 189 – the Suzuka car that crashed – landed on the luxury car platform “Dupont Registry”. The price: 4.9 million US dollars.

The car now for sale was last sold to its current owner in 1999 – and has been in a private collection for 23 years. Sotheby’s writes that the car has never been shown to the public since and remains in the exact condition it was delivered by Ferrari more than two decades ago.
