The inventors of the streaming platform Soundclound have founded a new start-up. Alexander Ljung and Eric Quidenus-Wahlfors are now selling e-bike subscriptions together with Jimdo founder Christian Springub. The first bikes should be on the streets of Berlin in September.
24-hour repair service, monthly cancellable subscription and everything digital – the promises of the new e-bike start-up “Dance” are big. But the founders Alexander Ljung, Eric Quidenus-Wahlfors and Christian Springub want to benefit from the current e-bike boom. After 16 months of planning, the inventors of the music streaming platform Soundcloud and their partner Springub present their specially made electric bike and deliver their new means of transport to the first hundred customers from August 31st.
“Dance”: Monthly subscription for e-bikes
The idea for the young company may already come from the competitor for some German bicycle enthusiasts “Swapfiets” be known: the company “Dance” offers customers their own e-bike for 79 euros a month. Promises within 24 hours “Dance” in addition, a repair or replacement in the event of theft.
At the beginning, the model is only available in Berlin. The range of services is ensured by our own warehouse with spare parts and permanently employed mechanics and logistics staff. Company boss Quidenus-Wahlforss confirmed to the magazine Gründerszene that he wanted to expand into other European cities in the immediate future. However, the entrepreneur has not yet given any precise details. What is certain, however, is that “Dance” has already posted a job advertisement for Hamburg on its website. According to the online magazine, there is also an expansion into the USA “electrive” conceivable.
Thousands of bicycles on the way to Berlin
Originally the first “Dance”-Bikes will be on the streets of Berlin as early as May. However, the pandemic and the long development period thwarted the start-up’s plans. The e-bikes are specially made for “Dance” made in Taiwan. Each individual part should be custom-made in order to be able to better predict the length of the service life and to prevent organized theft. Since the parts are not compatible with commercially available e-bikes, their resale is worthless.
The company also relies on digitization. The integrated lock can be opened and closed using the app. This also saves the current location, as well as the kilometers traveled and other usage data. The battery can be conveniently charged at home and has a range of up to 55 kilometers when fully charged. The three-stage drive aid can be adjusted on the handlebar.
After a one-year pilot phase, the e-bikes are finally entering the retail business. For the future, the two founders are also planning a business model for employers. At least some initial enthusiasm seems to have been sparked. According to Eric Quidenus-Wahlforss, thousands more orders are currently on their way to the capital and should arrive in the coming weeks.
