In the meantime, the major European car manufacturers have set ambitious goals for electrification. Daimler boss Ola Källenius is now calling for a common strategy to expand the charging infrastructure.
The Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Ola Källenius, has called for a European strategy for an extensive network of charging stations. “It is not enough if, for example, Germany, the Netherlands or the Scandinavian countries are running ahead,” said Källenius of the “Automobilwoche” magazine. “We need a plan that looks at all of Europe,” he added. “All major carmakers have made a clear commitment to electrification. Now the big challenge is the charging infrastructure, “said Källenius, according to the paper.
Daimler wants to set up 1,700 charging stations in six years
Källenius also addressed hydrogen: “Here we are talking about the period between 2025 and 2030.” A network along the most important motorways is necessary for heavy trucks. “I am convinced that every government will take on the issue after the general election. Even more has to happen here than before,” said the Daimler boss.
Daimler Truck, Traton and Volvo had already announced in July that they want to set up at least 1,700 charging stations for electric trucks and coaches across Europe by 2027. Starting next year, the companies will invest around 500 million euros through a joint company.
