Tire manufacturer had to stop production because a union blockade caused the warehouse to collapse

Today, the picture is worse. For example, the Pirelli plant in the town of Merlo had to stop because, for days, the unionists, stationed at the entrance of the establishment, decide what and who can enter.

Despite this blockade, the plant continued to produce with supplies in stock. However, this morning the plant had to stop its activity for an unusual reason: as the guild does not allow manufactured tires to leave, there is no physical place in that factory to continue storing products. In other words, the paralysis of the factory did not occur due to lack of inputs but because there is no place to store the products. It is estimated that there are more than 50,000 tires crowding the warehouses of that establishment.

This happens in a context, as Madanes Quintanilla explained, that the prices of the covers are exorbitant due to the shortage of tires and while the automotive terminals are not guaranteed their supply.

For the workers, the consequence of the suspension of production will mean that they do not get paid for the working day.

The conflict between the tire manufacturers and the union that represents the workers entered a stage of uncertainty this week after the failure of the meeting held by the parties in the Ministry of Labor.

Faced with this situation, members of the Single Union of Argentine Tire Workers (SUTNA) once again blocked access to the plants.

The issue is delicate because the supply of products to automotive companies is in danger. Although these plants were producing this week, the activity was restricted by union assemblies.

In the terminals they closely follow the negotiation since the stock of covers is at the limit. In fact, a few weeks ago, Nissan and Renault had to stop the production of pickups in Córdoba due to lack of products.

The union rejected the proposal for a 16% increase for review of the fifth tranche of salary adjustment agreed by parity for the period 2021/2022 plus a quarterly bonus for an amount to be defined subject to different guidelines. With that increase, the cumulative improvement of 66%.

Changes in the work schedule for weekends are also under discussion, since the activity is having a peak in demand.

All this negotiation is taking place in a climate of tension that, among other things, generated complaints from the business side for aggression by a member of the union against directors of some of these companies and the illegal occupation of the facilities.

The three companies signed a statement indicating that, given the new union rejection, they were removing the offer of the quarterly bonus, limiting themselves to offering the 16% readjustment and beginning to discuss the 2022/2023 parity.

The SUTNA communicated to its affiliates the rejection of the business proposal and announced that next Monday a new meeting would be held at the Ministry.
