The Mercedes EQS is only just purring on the market when Daimler is adding its little brother as an electric luxury sedan with the EQE. Design and technology clearly borrow from their big brother. However, the market launch is not until next summer.

Front, side line, rear and the whole tense as if from a bow are already known from the Mercedes EQS. With the 4.94 meter long EQE, the whole thing is in a class lower and similarly elegant. With a length of 3.12 meters, the wheelbase of the Mercedes EQE is nine centimeters shorter than that of its big brother and it does not have a large tailgate, but a fixed rear window. Compared to the current E-Class, the EQE offers almost three centimeters more shoulder room and almost eight centimeters more interior length; but with a significantly higher seating position due to the battery. The trunk volume is 430 liters. The interior design and equipment are clearly based on the EQS, for example the 1.41 meter wide MBUX hyperscreen, automatic comfort doors at the front and steering on the rear axle are available as options. On request, the Mercedes EQE is available with air suspension and rear-axle steering in two versions of 4.5 and 10 degrees, which reduce the turning circle to up to 10.70 meters. There is a choice of 19-, 20- or 21-inch wheels.

“After the EQS, the EQE is already the second model on our platform for luxury and upper-class electric vehicles. This speed of innovation shows the advantages of the scalable architecture,” says Development Director Markus Schäfer, “with the new EQE we can provide high-tech solutions Our electric flagship EQS can quickly be made available to a broader group of buyers. And our production flexibility has reached a new high at the EQE: At the Bremen plant, where the versions for the world market come off the assembly line, four other models are currently being manufactured. “

Even if the Mercedes EQE celebrates its world premiere at the IAA 2021 in Munich, it will not be on the market until next summer. The first model variant will be the Mercedes EQE 350 with 215 kW / 292 PS / 530 Nm, which – available on the EVA2 platform with rear-wheel and all-wheel drive – offers its customers an electric range of 550 to 660 kilometers with its 90 kWh battery pack . The standard consumption should still be below that of the particularly efficient EQS – 15.7 – 19.3 kWh per 100 kilometers. For fast charging with direct current, there is a DC fast charging system with up to 170 kilowatts on board. With the EQE, up to 35.55 kWh can be recharged in 15 minutes – this corresponds to a range of up to 250 kilometers.

The electric motors of the EQE on the front and rear axles are permanent magnet synchronous machines. The rotor of the AC motor is equipped with permanent magnets and therefore does not have to be supplied with electricity. The magnets – and thus the rotor – follow the rotating alternating current field in the windings of the stator. In the EQE, Mercedes-Benz uses what is known as a pull-in winding for a particularly strong magnetic field. The frequency is adjusted in the power electronics converters to the speed requirements of the driver. The machine on the rear axle is particularly powerful thanks to its six-phase design: It has two windings with three phases each. In addition to the standard drives on the rear axle, the Mercedes EQE is also available as an all-wheel drive version. The new Mercedes EQE will be produced in Bremen and at the German-Chinese joint venture BBAC in Beijing for the Chinese market.
