Electric versions of Mercedes G and Maybach EQS: Size matters

Mercedes is showing an impressive electrical package at the IAA 2021 in Munich. The electric versions of the Mercedes G-Class and the view of the Maybach EQS are particularly spectacular.

If you look at the new Mercedes launches on the eve of the IAA, you might think that the Swabians had renounced the internal combustion engine before they left for Munich. You will look in vain for the long-awaited Mercedes SL, as well as for other versions of the still young S-Class or the Mercedes AMG GT that has been sharpened with a plug-in module. Because what company director Ola Källenius presents together with his board colleagues Britta Seeger and Markus Schäfer, without exception, has a plug and generous dimensions. For the first time, there is also a power connection for the Mercedes G-Class, which will probably be offered with electric motors from mid-2023 and will still be more off-road than ever. Visually, the close-to-production Mercedes Concept EQG differs from its brothers with a combustion engine in particular through its modified radiator grille. The battery pack will be hidden in the ladder frame – not much more is known about the performance data.

“We are proud of the more than 400,000 ?? G ?? that we have produced so far,” emphasizes Dr. Emmerich Schiller, Head of the Daimler Off-Road Vehicle Product Division, “In its more than 40-year model history, the G-Class has always used the most modern and most suitable drive technology at the time – from the pre-chamber suction diesel of the early days to the AMG 4.0 Liter V8 in the current top model G 63. The electrification of this off-road vehicle legend is simply the next logical step against the background of our “Electric only” strategy. “

Not much further away in time is the Mercedes Maybach EQS, of which there is also a near-series concept study on display in Munich. For the first time, a Maybach is powered purely electrically. After the small series of the Mercedes G 650 Maybach a few years ago, the Mercedes offshoot has only recently started offering an off-road vehicle with the GLS, which competes with Range Rover, Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan for financially strong customers. Especially the face of the Mercedes Maybach EQS with the huge grill and the narrow LED eyes, together with the two-tone paint, point to the future main market of the luxury model: China.

“Many of our Mercedes-Maybach customers are digitally networked to a high degree and place the highest demands on our digital solutions. They also expect the brand of their choice to advocate sustainable values and take responsibility for the environment. The Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS fulfills All of these points and embodies sophisticated luxury in a more progressive way: The fully electric drive train not only enables consistently sustainable mobility, but also a new level of peace and relaxation for the passengers, “says Daimler Sales Director Britta Seeger. When it came to revealing the details of the drives, Daimler was still holding back. However, these should be even more powerful than the Mercedes EQS SUV, which will celebrate its premiere next year and is on the same level as the current EQS. The maximum range should be over 600 kilometers.

The side line with mighty running boards looks just as huge as the rest. The first electric model from Maybach rolls on mighty 24-inch wheels with an opulent design. Also impressive: the continuous light strip at the rear and a chrome-plated roof spoiler. As with the Mercedes EQS, also available here: automatic comfort doors at the front and rear. When the user approaches the vehicle, the door handles first extend. If you get closer, the driver’s door opens automatically. The driver can also use the MBUX operating system to open the rear doors remotely. Four individual seats, electrically adjustable and air-conditioned in a variety of ways, ensure luxury inside. An eye-catcher inside is the hyperscreen with Maybach-specific display styles and content. This 1.41 meter wide screen unit spans the entire dashboard. The three screens sit under a cover glass and visually merge. With the 12.3-inch OLED display, the front passenger has his own display and operating area.
