Car sharing is still a niche, despite many millions of registered users. The mood among providers has cooled – but they are already working on new ideas.

When Viola Palupski switched, she was considered exotic. It’s been ten years since she gave up her company car and didn’t buy a new car of her own. It should be enough to rent a car now and then when she needs it, the Berliner thought. “I did it out of conviction,” says Palupski. So instead of going to the car dealership, the now 53-year-old registered with Cambio, a company that now offers vehicles for sharing in more than 30 German cities. Since then, she has booked a car twice a week on average, and she also drives a rental car on vacation.
